Georgetown considering cooperating with LED street lighting manufacturers to convert to LED street lamps

Georgetown is considering making use of grant money to upgrade current massive street lighting system with more energy-saving LED street lights, which is cooperated with local LED street lighting manufacturers. However, an impending problem for local authority to address is to balance the energy efficient and potential health risks in LED lighting.

In recent days local authority had a discussion about the possibility of conversion to LED street lighting covering all the communities. A spokesperson reveals that the energy cost bills of switching to LED street lights from LED street lighting manufacturers will be about half of the cost of traditional lighting system.

As a green energy, LED products had been taken into consideration in a green movement across the country. In 2008, the Green Communities Act was signed into law. As a part of this legislation, the Department of Energy Recourses set up the Green Communities Division. The main purpose is to guide all 351 cities and towns along a path of enhanced energy efficiency and renewable energy toward zero net energy.

The GCD provides grant money, technical assistance, and other support to help municipalities reduce energy use and costs by enforcing clean energy projects.

Georgetown Municipal Light Department announced that it had received a grant money from DOER to mount LED street lights from LED street lighting manufacturers. The upgrading project will start earlier next year. LED street lights will consume 50 percent less energy than what will be replaced.
